Sandra Bullock and Bryan Randall shared nearly a decade together before his death from ALS in 2023. In the years that followed, Bullock stepped away from Hollywood to care for him and grieve privately. Now, as Practical Magic 2 nears release, the Oscar winner is slowly returning to public life, and beginning to speak more openly about the man she once called the love of her life.
Sandra Bullock & Bryan Randall’s Love Story Changed After His ALS Diagnosis
Bullock and Randall met in 2015 after she hired the photographer to take pictures at her son Louis’ birthday party. Their relationship developed into a long-term partnership, with Randall becoming an important part of Bullock’s family. Their lives changed dramatically after Randall was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He kept his illness private while Bullock helped care for him during the three years before his death in August 2023. Bullock described the combination of challenges her family faced during that period as “a trifecta that was pretty dark.” A source told the Daily Mail that caring for Randall while raising her children changed her considerably.
“Sandra really closed herself off when Bryan got sick, she was all about him and her kids. Her personality changed too, the laughs stopped coming. She was a much more serious person,” the insider said. Another source described how difficult the isolation became during the pandemic. “During Covid, Sandra was really scared. She was always isolated and lonely during that period and the couple of years that followed,” the insider said. Randall died from ALS in August 2023 at 57.
Bryan Randall Became an Important Part of Bullock’s Family
Bullock leaned on a small circle while keeping Randall’s condition private. Her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, and brother-in-law Ray Prado were among the few who initially knew about his diagnosis. She eventually told close friends Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman and his wife, Amanda Anka.
Randall had also become a father figure to Bullock’s two adopted children, Louis and Laila. He had an adult daughter, Skylar, from a previous relationship. “Bryan was an extremely nice person,” a source said. Although Bullock and Randall never legally married, the couple exchanged vows during a private beach ceremony in the Bahamas in 2017, according to the Daily Mail. Bullock previously described him as the “love of my life.”
After Randall’s death, Bullock remained largely out of the spotlight as she grieved and focused on her family. Now, insiders say she has reached a point where talking about him feels less painful. “Sandra is finally doing better, which is why she made Practical Magic 2,” a source told the Daily Mail. “She felt it was time to talk about Bryan, like it is okay now. She doesn’t mind opening up about him, as she wants to honor him in the best way with sweet memories,” the insider added.
Sandra Bullock Finds Her Way Back to Hollywood
Bullock’s return to public life coincides with her long-awaited return to the big screen. “Practical Magic 2,” the sequel to her 1998 cult favorite with Nicole Kidman, is set to become her first leading feature film role in four years. Her last movie was the 2022 adventure comedy “The Lost City.” Bullock has since begun gradually stepping back into the spotlight, appearing at CinemaCon with Kidman and joining Bateman’s “SmartLess” podcast.
She also made her Instagram debut in April, sharing behind-the-scenes material from the “Practical Magic 2” set. One insider suggested the move was partly connected to the reality of promoting a major Hollywood release after years away.
“She has to do press again, which she has not done in a while, so that is awkward for her,” the source said. “That is why she started her Instagram page. Everyone was like, ‘You have to do it.’”
Bullock’s return represents more than another Hollywood comeback. After years shaped by caregiving, loss and privacy, she appears ready to step back into the public eye while carrying Randall’s memory with her. “Practical Magic 2” is in theaters Sept. 10.
