Gunna’s Wunna Run Club and Walmart will award $10,000 in scholarships to five Florida A&M University students at the school’s homecoming 5K on Thursday, Oct. 22, in Tallahassee, Florida, the university announced on Oct. 16. Each student receives $2,000. The students must be pursuing majors with a health-related component. The race starts at Bragg Memorial Stadium, and advance registration is required.
What FAMU and Walmart Announced
The race is the fifth annual Walmart-sponsored homecoming run and walk at the university, according to FAMU. This year it carries a collaboration with Gunna’s running club. Registration closes at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at engage.famu.edu/e/ease-on-down-the-road5k/, per the release.
Regine Moore, director of constituent relations for corporate affairs at Walmart, said in the release that “it’s never been about just sponsoring a race.” She said the company comes back each year to build trust and to support health outcomes and access to wellness. The $10,000 divides evenly across the five awards, at $2,000 each. FAMU did not say how the five recipients will be chosen or when they will be named.
FAMU’s homecoming schedule, published Oct. 12, lists the Walmart 5K at 8 a.m. on Oct. 22 at Bragg Memorial Stadium. The week runs eight days, from Sunday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 25, under the theme “There’s No Place Like the Hill.” The coronation of Mister and Miss FAMU opens the week at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Gaither Gym. Monday brings a housing step show at 7 p.m. in the Lawson Center, and Tuesday has a fashion and art show at the same time and place.
A pep rally follows at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Will Packer Amphitheater. The NPHC step show is Friday at 7 p.m., and the parade starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. A gospel concert at Lee Hall Auditorium closes the week at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Smith, who chairs the homecoming committee, said in that release that “there’s truly no place like the hill.”
Gunna Also Headlines the Homecoming Concert
The same Thursday has a second event with Gunna’s name on it. FAMU announced that the homecoming concert at the Al Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center features Gunna, Summer Walker, T.I. and Bellygang Kushington. The concert starts at 7 p.m. Oct. 22. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster, with a separate link for students.
The 5K starts at 8 a.m. and the concert at 7 p.m., so the two events sit 11 hours apart on the same day. That is a calculation from FAMU’s published times. FAMU has not said whether Gunna will attend the race in person.
The concert release gives conflicting details. Its meta description lists doors at 6 p.m., while the body says 5 p.m. The meta description calls Bellygang Kushington a Florida artist, and the body calls him an Atlanta artist. FAMU’s release does not list ticket prices or venue capacity.
Caitlin Smith, FAMU’s Student Government Association vice president and chair of the Student Homecoming Steering Committee, said in the concert release: “The students asked for a concert that would feel worthy of the FAMU Homecoming experience.” Christian Aristilde, FAMU’s chief business development and partnerships officer, said in the same release that the university wanted something for every generation of Rattlers.
The football game is the other fixed point in the week. FAMU’s homecoming news release lists the game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Bragg Memorial Stadium. The university’s homecoming website lists the same game at 4 p.m., with gates opening at 1 p.m. The two FAMU pages disagree on the kickoff time.
How the Run Club Grew
Gunna announced the Wunna Run Club in 2025. The first race, the Wunna Run 5K, took place Sept. 3, 2025, in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. NYCRUNS, the Brooklyn running organization that produced it, said in a news release that pop-up registration reached capacity within a few hours. NYCRUNS did not give a participant total. Steve Lastoe, NYCRUNS founding CEO, said in the release that the race went “from an idea to reality” in just under a month.
Turnout figures differ by source. FAMU’s release says the Brooklyn run drew more than 1,000 runners. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, in its own interview with Gunna published Sept. 11, reported that roughly 2,000 people joined the first run.
The AJC reported that the club has since held runs in Atlanta, Houston and Toronto in 2025, and in South Africa earlier this year. The newspaper’s Atlanta report described a $50 entry fee for a Sunday run at Lee & White on the city’s Westside Beltline, with proceeds going to Gunna’s Great Giveaway, his nonprofit that helps families in his native South Fulton. “It was for a run, and it was all community,” Gunna told the AJC about the purpose of the runs.
The AJC also reported that Gunna was recently named Under Armour’s global brand ambassador and released a sportswear collection with the company called P-Star. The AJC did not say Under Armour sponsors the run club. Gunna said his fitness work reflects a broader goal. According to the AJC, he said rappers should try to beat the life expectancy statistics for Black male artists.
What Remains Before Race Day
Registration for the 5K closes at noon Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to FAMU. The release gives the university’s media contact as Rachel James-Terry, senior director of strategic communications. FAMU has not named the five scholarship recipients, and its release does not say when they will be announced.
