Abbott Elementary season 6 premiered Wednesday, Oct. 7, on ABC at 8:30 p.m. Eastern with 22 half-hour episodes ahead, according to Disney+. The comedy arrives with seven 2026 Emmy nominations, including a fifth straight nomination for outstanding comedy series.

When and Where to Watch Abbott Elementary Season 6

New episodes air Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu. Subscribers who get Hulu through Disney+ can watch there as well, Disney says on the same page. The season runs 22 episodes, and the first five seasons are on Hulu for viewers who want to catch up before the new episodes. Disney’s page lists no guest stars for the season.

Quinta Brunson created the series, which follows teachers at an underfunded public elementary school in Philadelphia. Brunson plays Janine Teagues, a second-grade teacher. The returning cast includes William Stanford Davis as custodian Mr. Johnson, Janelle James as principal Ava Coleman, Chris

Perfetti as history teacher Jacob Hill, Sheryl Lee Ralph as kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, Lisa Ann Walter as second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti and Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie.

Disney’s season description says the show returns with a “new school year, same unpredictable staff.” Season 5 ended with the staff on a trip to Miami for PESCA weekend. The school stayed open, Janine and Gregory reconciled, and Gregory won a promotion to assistant principal.

ABC’s local stations ran a preview in which the cast and director talked about what to expect. Tyler James Williams said viewers will follow Gregory as he tries to carry out plans he described in last season’s finale, according to ABC’s preview. Director Randall Einhorn hinted that well-known Philadelphia names may appear in the opening episode. Brunson would not name anyone and said the season holds major moments.

How Many Emmy Nominations Abbott Elementary Earned

The Television Academy’s nominations program lists seven categories for the show in 2026: outstanding comedy series, casting, directing, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress and writing. The comedy series category had eight nominees: “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,”

“Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” “Nobody Wants This,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Shrinking” and “Widow’s Bay.” Disney’s page adds that the series earned a nomination for best television series, musical or comedy at the 2026 Golden Globes. The Golden Globes nomination and the Emmy comedy series nomination mean the show has stayed in the top race for a fifth consecutive Emmy cycle.

What the Premise Gets Right about Teacher Spending

Disney describes the school as underfunded. Two sets of public numbers show how that setup compares with the situation of working teachers.

AdoptAClassroom.org, a nonprofit that funds classroom supplies, surveyed 3,700 certified or licensed K-12 teachers in spring 2025 across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organization’s 2025 teacher survey found that teachers spent an average of $895 of their own money on supplies during the 2024-25 school year. That figure is up 49% from $600 in 2015.

The same survey puts the median school supply budget at $200. A teacher spending the average pays about 4.5 times that median from a personal account. Spread over a 10-month school year, $895 comes to about $90 a month. The survey says 97% of teachers said their school budget did not cover their needs, which works out to roughly 3,590 of the 3,700 respondents.

Eighty-two percent said they buy essential supplies such as paper, pencils and markers, and 81% said they do it so every student has the same classroom opportunities. Another 66% said they buy food for students, 64% buy books and inclusive materials and 20% hold a second job, a 25% increase since 2023. AdoptAClassroom also found that 82% of respondents worried about inflation and rising costs.

The federal government measured the same habit with a different method. The National Center for Education Statistics found in its analysis of the 2015-16 teacher survey that public school teachers who spent their own unreimbursed money on supplies during 2014-15 averaged $478, with a median of $297. At schools where 75% or more of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, the average rose to $550.

The same analysis found that 9% of teachers at those schools spent more than $1,000, and that about 44% of all teachers who spent their own money kept it to $250 or less.

The two surveys do not match. The federal study covers public school teachers and a different school year, and counts only those who spent money without reimbursement. AdoptAClassroom’s respondents come from its own educator network and include private and charter schools. For that reason the $895 and $478 averages cannot be read as a single trend line, though both sources put the typical amount in the hundreds of dollars and both show higher spending where poverty is higher.

Where Abbott Elementary Season 6 Films

The Philadelphia setting is part of the show’s identity, but the series is not made there. ABC’s preview says it is unknown whether production will return to Philadelphia, and Walter said cast members plan to visit the city after the season wraps.

The preview also quotes the cast on the show’s appeal. Davis credited the affection among the actors as the key ingredient, and James said the show feels real and is funniest when it is most genuine. Ralph said the season takes the characters around the world and back, and Walter said one day on set had four major storylines.

Walter also said a new teacher butts heads with her character, who has taken on a role as union representative. Disney’s page lists no guest stars for the season, so any appearance by the Philadelphia figures Einhorn mentioned would be a surprise for viewers.
