Life changed dramatically for former NFL star Chris Johnson, CJ2K, long after he stepped away from football. The one-time Offensive Player of the Year, celebrated for his blazing speed and explosive runs, has revealed that he is living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease. During an emotional television interview, Johnson shared how quickly the illness has transformed his everyday life. Although he has lost the ability to speak naturally, his determination, faith, and commitment to raising awareness remain stronger than ever.

Chris Johnson Opens Up About His Devastating Diagnosis

Fans tuning into Good Morning America expected a major announcement from Chris Johnson, but few anticipated the heartbreaking news that unfolded.

The former Tennessee Titans and New York Jets running back revealed he was diagnosed with ALS last year at age 39. Now 40, the disease has progressed so rapidly that he communicates using a voice-generating device controlled by his eyes. Before losing his natural voice, doctors recorded it so the device could continue speaking in a voice that still sounds like him.

Despite the challenges, Johnson wanted viewers to understand that the disease has not changed the person he is inside.

“First, I want people to know that I’m still me,” Johnson said through the device. “ALS has changed what my body can do but it hasn’t changed who I am.”

He also explained why he chose to make his diagnosis public.

“Because if sharing my story helps even one person get diagnosed sooner, inspires more research or gives another family hope, then it’s worth it.”

Looking back, Johnson recalled the first warning signs while he was still active and healthy.

“I first noticed weakness in my right hand,” he told Michael Strahan. “At first it was little things like, my grip didn’t feel right. And I wasn’t as strong as I’d always been.”

Initially, neither he nor his family imagined the symptoms pointed to such a devastating illness. His wife, Brittany, believed the weakness could simply be another football-related injury, perhaps a pinched nerve.

Instead, extensive medical testing delivered life-changing news.

Johnson recalled the difficult conversation with doctors.

“We hoped it was something else, but after thorough testing, they finally came down with a diagnosis of ALS,” he explained. “They told us about a medication that might extend life by a few months, then they told us to get our affairs in order.”

Rather than giving up, the family searched for additional options after seeing neurologist Dr. Merit Cudkowicz discuss ALS on Good Morning America alongside actor Eric Dane.

Johnson said, “It was hard hearing that but after watching Good Morning America and seeing Dr Merit [Cudkowicz] with Eric Dane, we reached out to her. She was willing to think more creatively and offer experimental treatments that might help and advance research.”

Chris Johnson Finds Strength In Family and Hope

The diagnosis brought an emotional shock that extended well beyond CJ2K himself. Brittany admitted that accepting the reality of ALS was incredibly difficult, especially as she thought about their four children and how their lives would change.

“You want it to be anything else, you want the doctors to be wrong,” she said. “The life that we previously had is now a thing of the past, but we’re still hopeful that a breakthrough will happen, and that God, a miracle will happen.”

Doctors later determined Johnson has sporadic ALS, the most common form of the disease. Unlike inherited ALS, sporadic cases occur without a family history, making the diagnosis even more unexpected.

Reflecting on the moment he learned the truth, Johnson admitted that accepting it wasn’t easy.

“It can happen to someone who never expected it,” he said. “I don’t know if you can ever fully process it.”

Still, he decided early on that he would refuse to let the diagnosis define him.

“At first you’re in shock, then you realize you have two choices: you can give up or you can fight. I chose to fight.”

Brittany has remained by his side throughout every stage of the illness, helping him navigate daily challenges while encouraging him to remain hopeful. Johnson credits both his wife and their children with giving him the motivation to keep moving forward despite the rapid progression of the disease.

Chris Johnson Shares The Reality Of Living With ALS

Although Johnson retired from the NFL in 2017 after an outstanding 10-year career that included more than 11,000 rushing yards, three Pro Bowl selections and the 2009 Offensive Player of the Year award, nothing prepared him for the speed at which ALS would change his life.

Speaking candidly during the interview, he revealed just how dramatically things have changed in only a year.

“It’s continued to progress much faster than I imagined,” Johnson explained. “I want people to understand just how quickly ALS can attack your body.”

He then shared one of the most emotional examples of what the disease has taken from him.

“Just over a year ago I was picking up my seven-year-old daughter so she could make a wish with her birthday cake. Today, I couldn’t do that.”

The moment served as a heartbreaking reminder that ALS affects far more than physical movement. It changes everyday moments that many families take for granted, making even the simplest activities impossible over time.

Despite losing his ability to speak naturally, Johnson remains determined to use his experience to help others. By sharing his story publicly, he hopes more people will recognize the symptoms earlier, support ALS research, and encourage scientists searching for more effective treatments.

His football accomplishments made him one of the NFL’s most electrifying running backs, but his courage in facing this devastating illness may leave an even greater legacy. As Johnson continues his fight surrounded by his wife and four children, his message is one of resilience, hope, and determination in the face of unimaginable adversity.
