Acclaimed filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood is giving fans their first major look at Children of Blood and Bone, the long-awaited adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel. In an exclusive interview with ESSENCE, the director behind The Woman King and The Old Guard opens up about the responsibility of bringing the vibrant world of Orïsha to life on the big screen.
From Page to Epic Screen
Over the years, Prince-Bythewood has built a reputation for adapting beloved stories with the care and respect they deserve. From The Secret Life of Bees to The Old Guard, she has consistently translated acclaimed source material into compelling films. Now, she takes on what may be her biggest challenge yet: adapting Children of Blood and Bone, Tomi Adeyemi’s groundbreaking 2018 young adult fantasy novel.
A Cultural Phenomenon
Following its release, Children of Blood and Bone became one of the most celebrated young adult novels of the past decade. Inspired by West African mythology, the story follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman determined to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha after it is violently erased. The novel debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list, earned multiple literary honors, and launched a trilogy that captivated readers around the world.
Assembling an All-Star Ensemble
Bringing Orïsha to life required a cast capable of matching the scale of the story, and Prince-Bythewood assembled one of the year’s most impressive ensembles. Thuso Mbedu leads the cast alongside Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Regina King, Lashana Lynch, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
When the cast was first announced, one fan compared the lineup to the legendary 1996 Chicago Bulls because of its extraordinary depth of talent.
“This is an epic ensemble,” she said. “I watch the film sometimes and I’m like, ‘How did we do this?’”
A True Collaboration
Beyond assembling an all-star cast, one of the film’s greatest strengths has been Prince-Bythewood’s partnership with Tomi Adeyemi, with whom she co-wrote the screenplay. The director emphasized how closely aligned they were from the very beginning.
“I spoke to her about my vision of how I wanted to approach it, of bringing all of us into this incredible fantasy world to allow all of us to see ourselves reflected beautifully and heroically,” Prince-Bythewood told ESSENCE. “It was from that moment that we were completely aligned on vision.”
Rooted in Authenticity
To further bring Orïsha to life, the production was filmed in South Africa, reuniting Prince-Bythewood with many of the artists and craftspeople she previously worked with on The Woman King. The country’s landscapes helped shape the visual identity of the fantasy world.
In addition, Academy Award-winning composer Terence Blanchard returns to score the film, continuing another major collaboration with the director.

For Prince-Bythewood, Children of Blood and Bone represents more than another adaptation. It’s an opportunity to introduce audiences to a world where African mythology, fantasy, and heroism exist on an epic cinematic scale.
