Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 36. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, police and emergency medical services in Greenville, South Carolina, found her unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an apartment where she had been staying temporarily. Responders attempted resuscitation. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., the coroner’s office said. An autopsy completed Monday turned up “no signs of trauma,” in the coroner’s words, that would have contributed to her death.

Officials have not released a cause of death. The Greenville Police Department has said the preliminary investigation found no indication of foul play. Panettiere spent the last years of her life speaking openly about the opioid and alcohol addiction she carried through most of her adult life. In May 2026 she published a memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” covering her childhood in Hollywood, motherhood, mental health, addiction and recovery in her own words.

A police report said it was unknown whether Panettiere had been using drugs or alcohol, while her representative said the family was “hopeful that justice will be served.”

Attention has also turned to Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, who was at the South Carolina residence when she died. Page Six reported that a disturbing June Instagram comment from Hickerson recently resurfaced. Responding to a question about dating, he wrote, “Yes, it’s wonderful if she gets out of line I just Google myself and say hey stop it this is what I’m allegedly capable of.” Hickerson previously faced domestic violence charges involving Panettiere. Authorities have said there were no signs of foul play, and his attorney urged people to allow the investigation to proceed.

Meanwhile, Neutrogena addressed another controversy after Panettiere’s past comments about the brand resurfaced. New details have since emerged about the emergency response. According to 911 dispatch audio obtained by the New York Post, a caller reported an “unresponsive female” in “cardiac arrest” at 1:51 p.m. from a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment. A police report released Tuesday identifies the callers as Brian and Zach Hickerson. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Panettiere using advanced cardiac life support. A subsequent dispatch referred to responders heading to a possible “overdose” at the same address and stated that “CPR is in progress.” Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Authorities have said there were no signs of foul play. An autopsy was completed Monday. While the dispatch audio provides more information about the circumstances surrounding the emergency response, an official cause of death has not been determined.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, remembered her in a statement to ABC News, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

The latest developments may also bring Panettiere’s past struggles with alcohol and opioid addiction back into focus, as she had spoken candidly about both over the years. They could also renew interest in her controversial 2024 interview. In that interview, viewers expressed concern about her speech and apparent difficulty keeping her eyes open. New details have emerged about Hayden Panettiere’s final hours after authorities completed an autopsy Monday. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said investigators found “no signs of trauma” that contributed to her death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and additional studies, including toxicology, meaning her official cause of death has not been determined.

Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call at 1:51 p.m. Sunday reporting a cardiac arrest at a Greenville, South Carolina, residence where Panettiere had been temporarily staying. Responders found her unresponsive and initiated advanced cardiac life support. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

Dispatch audio obtained from Broadcastify references a possible overdose. Authorities have not said whether an overdose occurred. TMZ reported that Narcan was found in the apartment.

A police report released Tuesday identifies the 911 callers as Brian and Zach Hickerson. An officer who responded wrote that he spoke with Zach Hickerson first, who “advised this was his brother’s girlfriend.” Brian Hickerson was Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend. Police said the preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

The charges stem from incidents between May 2019 and January 2020. He had originally faced an eight-count case.

May 7 — Hickerson begins serving his sentence at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. He serves less than two weeks, according to court records.

She says someone on her team gave her “happy pills” at 15 before red carpets and interviews. “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.”

Sept. 28 — On “Red Table Talk,” Panettiere describes using alcohol to cope with postpartum depression. “I did what I had seen family and the people around me do whenever they were depressed or stressed out, which was reach for a bottle.”

2023

Feb. 19 — Her brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, is found dead in his New York apartment at 28. The family says he died of cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, coupled with aortic valve complications.

March — Panettiere returns to acting in “Scream VI” after a four-year hiatus, her first press tour in years. Asked about her brother on “Good Morning America,” she says: “He’s right here with me.”
