Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 36. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, police and emergency medical services in Greenville, South Carolina, found her unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an apartment where she had been staying temporarily. Responders attempted resuscitation before she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

An autopsy completed the following day found “no signs of trauma” that would have contributed to her death, according to the coroner’s office. Officials have not released a cause or manner of death, and the Greenville Police Department has said its preliminary investigation found no indication of foul play. Panettiere spent the final years of her life speaking openly about addiction, mental health, motherhood and difficult experiences from her years in Hollywood. In May 2026, she published her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” offering her own account of those chapters of her life.

What Happened on the Day Hayden Panettiere Died

According to TMZ, sources with direct knowledge confirmed Panettiere’s death. Law enforcement sources said police responded to an incident involving the actress and opened an investigation. More information about the emergency response emerged in the days that followed. According to 911 dispatch audio obtained by the New York Post, a caller reported an “unresponsive female” in “cardiac arrest” at 1:51 p.m. from a Greenville apartment.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Panettiere using advanced cardiac life support. A subsequent dispatch referred to responders heading to a possible “overdose” at the same address and stated that “CPR is in progress.” Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, remembered her in a statement to ABC News, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

What Authorities Know About Hayden Panettiere’s Death

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office completed an autopsy Monday and said investigators found Panettiere’s death to be atraumatic. Her cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and additional studies, including toxicology. A police report released after her death identified the 911 callers as Brian and Zach Hickerson. An officer who responded wrote that he first spoke with Zach Hickerson, who “advised this was his brother’s girlfriend.”

Brian Hickerson was Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend and was at the South Carolina residence when she died. Dispatch audio obtained from Broadcastify referenced a possible overdose, although authorities have not said an overdose occurred. TMZ reported that Narcan was found inside the apartment.

Police have said their preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has since begun assisting Greenville police with the investigation. A police report said it was unknown whether Panettiere had been using drugs or alcohol, while her representative said the family was “hopeful that justice will be served.”

Attention has also remained on Hickerson because of his history with Panettiere. Page Six reported that a June Instagram comment from Hickerson resurfaced after her death. Responding to a question about dating, he wrote, “Yes, it’s wonderful if she gets out of line I just Google myself and say hey stop it this is what I’m allegedly capable of.”

Hickerson previously faced domestic violence charges involving Panettiere. Authorities have not accused him of wrongdoing in connection with her death, and his attorney urged people to allow the investigation to proceed.

Hayden Panettiere’s Mom Speaks Out After Her Death

Eight days after Panettiere’s death, her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, gave her first sit-down interview on Aug. 24 on “Good Morning America.” Vogel said she was still struggling to process losing her second child after Panettiere’s younger brother, Jansen, died in 2023. “I still am not grasping that this is real. It doesn’t feel real; my mind tells me it’s not at times. You know, it’s going to be a process,” she said.

Vogel also responded to criticism surrounding the way she had publicly discussed her daughter’s death. “You don’t have a right to tell me how I mourn the loss of my second child. That’s my domain,” she said. She said she wanted Panettiere remembered as “the talented, you know, beautiful, outgoing, intelligent woman she really was.”

The GMA interview followed Vogel’s earlier criticism of Hickerson, whom she blamed for their estrangement. She previously called him a “toxic individual who I believe led to her death.” Vogel initially broke her silence by providing initial brief comments over a phone call about her daughter’s death to NBC News on Aug. 18. She praised Panettiere’s talent while also discussing their strained relationship and criticizing Hickerson.

The following day, police conducted a welfare check at a Greenville home belonging to Hickerson’s family. Authorities said the call was unrelated to Panettiere’s death investigation and that no incident report was required. In a clip which is now unavailable from an Aug. 19 interview, Gayle King later criticized Vogel’s remarks on “CBS Mornings,” calling them “unseemly” and questioning why painful family issues were being revisited so soon after Panettiere’s death.

Neutrogena Responds After Hayden Panettiere’s Past Comments Resurface

Panettiere’s death also brought renewed attention to comments she made about her former relationship with Neutrogena. The actress had said losing her longtime partnership with the brand after publicly discussing postpartum depression “really” broke her heart. Neutrogena later acknowledged that the situation “made her feel unsupported during a very difficult time.”

The company also announced plans for a significant investment in a community health partner supporting women, including those seeking help for postpartum depression. The renewed discussion came months after Panettiere addressed the partnership while promoting her memoir.

Hayden Panettiere’s 2024 Interview Sparked Concern

One of the earlier moments now being revisited happened in September 2024, when Panettiere sat down with People while promoting her thriller “Amber Alert.” The conversation became a story of its own after footage circulated on social media. Viewers focused on the actress’ speech and appearance, with some claiming she appeared to be slurring her words or struggling to keep her eyes open. According to Page Six, the reaction became so intense that some social media users urged People to remove the interview. Panettiere later responded to the speculation on Instagram.

She said she had been awake for two days because one of her dogs experienced an emergency and needed urgent surgery. She also said the interview lasted longer than she expected, and her team eventually asked whether the remainder could be rescheduled because she was becoming exhausted.

Panettiere pushed back against strangers attempting to diagnose her based on the footage, maintaining that matters involving her health and any treatment she received were private. Speaking on “On Purpose with Jay Shetty,” she said a trusted older female friend put her in bed aboard a yacht in the South of France with an undressed, “very famous” man in his 30s. Editor’s Note: This timeline covers 2021 through 2026. Some events described here occurred earlier and became public later. Panettiere was 18 at the time of the yacht incident she described in her 2026 memoir. Neutrogena ended its relationship with her years before she discussed it publicly in May 2026. Her daughter, Kaya, was born in December 2014. Both the date of the event and the date it was disclosed are given where they differ.

2021

April 20 — Brian Hickerson pleads no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse, cohabitant or girlfriend. He is sentenced to 45 days in county jail, four years of formal probation, 52 domestic violence classes and a $500 fine, and is placed under a five-year protective order barring contact with Panettiere. The charges stem from incidents between May 2019 and January 2020. He had originally faced an eight-count case.

May 7 — Hickerson begins serving his sentence at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles. He serves less than two weeks, according to court records.

2021 — Panettiere writes on Instagram: “I am coming forward with the truth about what happened to me with the hope that my story will empower others in abusive relationships to get the help they need and deserve.”

July — Panettiere and Hickerson are photographed together in West Hollywood after his release. “Hayden and I are not back together but are working on a friendship,” Hickerson tells E! News. “The first step in my recovery as an abuser is making amends.”

2022

March 25 — Panettiere and Hickerson are involved in a fight outside the Sunset Marquis hotel in Los Angeles. Video obtained by TMZ appears to show Panettiere being kicked. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies respond to a fight call at 12:18 a.m.; no one is present when they arrive and no report is filed. A representative says Panettiere is “OK.”

July — Panettiere discloses her opioid and alcohol addiction publicly for the first time, in People and a joint interview with “Good Morning America.” “I was on top of the world and I ruined it,” she says. She says someone on her team gave her “happy pills” at 15 before red carpets and interviews. “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.”

Sept. 28 — On “Red Table Talk,” Panettiere describes using alcohol to cope with postpartum depression. “I did what I had seen family and the people around me do whenever they were depressed or stressed out, which was reach for a bottle.”

2023

Feb. 19 — Her brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, is found dead in his New York apartment at 28. The family says he died of cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, coupled with aortic valve complications.

March — Panettiere returns to acting in “Scream VI” after a four-year hiatus, her first press tour in years. Asked about her brother on “Good Morning America,” she says: “He’s right here with me.”

2023 — In a profile in The New York Times, Panettiere acknowledges renewed feelings for Hickerson. “There are feelings there, yes,” she says, adding of his arrests, “He knows he deserved what happened to him.” She says the relationship is contingent on his continued recovery: “I did not do any of this lightly.”

2024

January — Panettiere tells The Messenger that filming “Nashville” was “very traumatizing because I felt like I was acting out my own life,” saying writers mirrored her character’s storylines on her real struggles with alcoholism and postpartum depression.

Sept. 18 — People publishes a cover interview in which Panettiere discusses grief following her brother’s death. Videos from the interview circulate widely and prompt public concern about her wellbeing. Her representative later addresses the reaction, citing exhaustion and grief.

2026

May 11 — On Jay Shetty’s podcast “On Purpose,” Panettiere describes being led below deck on a yacht in the South of France at 18 by a woman she trusted, and placed in bed beside an undressed man she identifies only as a famous British singer-songwriter. “By the time I’d realized I was in danger, I was quite literally out to sea.”

May 11 — In the same podcast appearance, Panettiere says Neutrogena ended their roughly 10-year relationship after she spoke publicly about postpartum depression. “Of all the things that they would fire me over, this was the last thing that I thought they would ever fire me over,” she says. “Never for a second did I think or care that anyone would have a bad reaction to it. It was my truth.”

May 13 — Hickerson tells TMZ he does not dispute the memoir’s account of his abuse. “I got arrested for, you know, abusing her, and I wouldn’t blame her friends for being pissed off at me.” He says he asked her to cut one passage, which remained in the book.

May 16 — Panettiere tells The Hollywood Reporter she was “groomed” as a child performer. “I was like a little soldier, and I always have been. No was never an option.”

May 19 — “This Is Me: A Reckoning” is published by Grand Central Publishing. In it, Panettiere writes about postpartum depression, addiction to alcohol and Klonopin, relinquishing custody of Kaya, domestic abuse and her brother’s death. She writes that a doctor told her she would “be dead within five years” if she did not stop drinking. Of the yacht incident, she writes: “As I settled in underneath the sheets, I disassociated. My body no longer felt like my own.”

May 20 — Panettiere is photographed at LaGuardia Airport and declines to answer questions about the memoir.

Aug. 13 — A Los Angeles judge denies Hickerson’s motions to reduce his domestic violence convictions to misdemeanors and expunge them from his record. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirms the ruling.

Aug. 15 — Panettiere is photographed at Los Angeles International Airport boarding a flight to Greenville, South Carolina. It is her final public appearance.

Aug. 16 — Panettiere is found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville. A 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest comes in. Responders administer advanced cardiac life support. She is pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., the coroner’s office said. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirms her death that evening, calling her “an incredible light and a force of nature.” She was 36.

Aug. 17 — The Greenville County Coroner’s Office says an autopsy has been completed and her death was free of physical injury. Cause and manner remain pending further investigation and additional studies. Police say the preliminary investigation shows no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
