For many “Family Matters” fans, Myra Monkhouse remains impossible to separate from Steve Urkel’s story. Introduced as one of the few women genuinely captivated by Steve exactly as he was, Myra grew from a recurring love interest into one of the sitcom’s most recognizable supporting characters.

The actress behind Myra from “Family Matters” was Michelle Thomas, whose television career stretched well beyond the ’90s sitcom. Thomas appeared on “The Cosby Show” before “Family Matters” and was beginning a new chapter on daytime television when she died in 1998.

So, who was Michelle Thomas, and how did Myra become such an enduring part of “Family Matters”?

Who Was Michelle Thomas Before ‘Family Matters’?

Thomas was born in Massachusetts in 1968 into a family already connected to entertainment. Her father, Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, was a founding member and saxophonist for Kool & the Gang, while her mother, Phynjuar Thomas, was a stage actress.

Thomas studied dance and began pursuing a career in the performing arts at a young age. The Los Angeles Times reported that she studied at New York’s Broadway Dance Center and won an international teen pageant in 1985.

Television audiences became familiar with Thomas before she joined “Family Matters.” From 1988 to 1990, she played Justine Phillips, Theo Huxtable’s girlfriend, on “The Cosby Show.” Theo was played by Malcolm-Jamal Warner, whom Thomas also dated in real life for several years.

Thomas later appeared in projects including “A Man Called Hawk,” “Thea,” “Roseanne” and the 1991 movie “Hangin’ With the Homeboys.” Then “Family Matters” introduced the role that would become most closely associated with her career.

Michelle Thomas Made Myra From ‘Family Matters’ Unforgettable

Thomas joined “Family Matters” in 1993 as Myra Monkhouse, a young woman introduced as a potential match for Jaleel White’s Steve Urkel. While Steve had spent years pursuing Laura Winslow, Myra offered something different: she was immediately attracted to Steve and had little interest in him becoming somebody else.

The character initially appeared in a recurring capacity before becoming a larger part of the series. Myra and Steve eventually dated, creating one of the show’s central romantic complications as Steve continued harboring feelings for Laura. Thomas remained with “Family Matters” through its final season in 1998.

Her work with White also led to a friendship that lasted beyond their scenes together. In 2026, White recalled that Thomas was like an older sister to him while discussing his friendship with Warner.

Michelle Thomas Wanted to Show She Could Do More Than Comedy

“Family Matters” may have made Thomas especially recognizable, but she did not want sitcoms to define the limits of her career. After the series ended, she joined CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” in 1998 as Callie Rogers, an aspiring singer with a complicated history with Malcolm Winters, played by Shemar Moore.

The role gave Thomas an opportunity she had been seeking. In a 1998 “Soap Opera Digest” interview archived by Sitcoms Online, Thomas explained that years of sitcom work had led some producers to view her primarily as a comedic performer.

“I can be dramatic, too,” she said while discussing what the soap opera allowed her to demonstrate. Her work on “The Young and the Restless” earned Thomas an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series, according to her Los Angeles Times obituary. It offered a glimpse of the direction her career was taking beyond Myra.

How Michelle Thomas Is Remembered Today

Thomas died from a very rare cancer in December 1998, only months after beginning her role on “The Young and the Restless.” She left behind a television résumé that included three characters remembered by different generations of viewers: Justine, Myra and Callie.

Decades later, her presence is still felt in conversations about “Family Matters.” When White discussed why he does not believe the sitcom should receive a modern revival, he specifically mentioned the loss of Thomas and Rosetta LeNoire, who played Mother Winslow, as part of what could not be recreated.

White has continued celebrating his connection to the series in other ways, including sharing memories from his years before and during his time as Steve Urkel.

For viewers searching for Michelle Thomas because they remember Myra, her story extends well beyond Steve Urkel’s girlfriend. She had already established herself on one major sitcom before “Family Matters,” turned Myra into a lasting ’90s television character and was beginning to demonstrate her dramatic range before she died in 1998.
