Once Upon a Farm Recalls Toddler Bars After Choking Reports

Updated on :

Chewy granola bars packed with rolled oats, puffed grains, and dried cranberries arranged on crumpled baking paper over a cooling rack.

The Once Upon a Farm recall covers every lot and variety of Tractor Wheels Organic Toddler Soft-Baked Bars, which the Berkeley, California, company pulled on Oct. 30 after three choking complaints reached the FDA, according to the recall notice the agency posted Nov. 2.

The two FDA pages on the recall describe different levels of danger. The company’s notice says, “No injuries have been reported to date.” The agency’s separate advisory says toddlers suffered complete airway obstruction and that some incidents needed emergency response and hospital observation. Hospital observation does not by itself mean injury, but a parent reading both pages gets two different levels of alarm.

What the FDA Advisory Says About the Bars

The advisory says the FDA received several reports describing toddlers ages 1.5 to 2.5 suffering complete airway obstruction. It does not give a count. The company’s notice gives one: three consumer complaints, each reported to the FDA as choking. The notice says the bar can turn into a dense, dry and sticky mass on contact with saliva and during chewing. The advisory warns that once a toddler chews the bar into that mass, back blows and the Heimlich maneuver may not clear it. The FDA first warned consumers on Oct. 30 and updated the advisory on Nov. 3. The agency posted the company’s notice three days after the company announced it, a calculation from the two dates.

Which Tractor Wheels Products Are Covered

The recall covers all three flavors: Strawberry, Pumpkin and Beet; Apple, Sweet Potato and Spinach; and Banana, Pumpkin and Cauliflower. Variety packs and sampler packs are included. The notice lists unexpired best-by dates from 10/30/2026 to 8/26/2027, so a box bought this fall can fall inside the recall. The bars went nationwide, including Puerto Rico, through online sales and retail stores, according to the notice. The advisory names Costco, Target and Walmart as sellers and says the bars may also have sold through Amazon and third-party websites. It tells retailers not to sell the recalled product.

What Parents Should Do With the Bars

The company tells consumers not to open the package or serve the bars. Parents can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or email care@uponafarm.com, the notice says. The advisory adds two instructions. Anyone with a choking child should call 911, and anyone whose child has symptoms should contact a health care provider. Any bar with a best-by date from 10/30/2026 through 8/26/2027 belongs in the recall.
