A devastating accident has cast a shadow over preparations for one of the year’s most anticipated performances, as a worker lost his life while helping build the stage for Shakira’s upcoming show in Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred on April 26 at Copacabana Beach, where crews have been working tirelessly ahead of the global superstar’s free concert scheduled for May 2. Despite rapid emergency response and medical efforts, the technician did not survive, leaving organizers, colleagues, and onlookers shaken.
A Day of Preparation Becomes a Scene of Loss
According to authorities and organizers, the worker suffered severe injuries while operating equipment used in assembling the large concert structure. The state fire brigade confirmed via PEOPLE, “A worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system. Before the arrival of emergency teams, the victim had already been removed from the equipment by other employees present.”
Emergency responders acted quickly at the scene. The brigade added, “Military personnel from the ambulance service of the 3rd Maritime Group (GMAR-Copacabana) immediately began pre-hospital care on the victim, who was then transported to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, death was confirmed.”
Organizers of the “Todo Mundo no Rio” event also addressed the tragedy in a public statement. “The event organizers confirm that an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26th) tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show,” they shared.
They continued, “First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital.” The statement concluded with a message of support: “At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim’s family.”
Witnesses Recount Chaos at Shakira’s Rio Concert Site
Eyewitness accounts paint a chaotic picture of the moments leading up to the rescue effort. Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, who was present on the beach, described the sudden shift in atmosphere. “Out of nowhere, we saw people running, and when we looked, the structure was on the ground,” he said, according to France 24.
He added, “People were saying that a man had gotten trapped underneath. People rushed over to pull him out.”
The accident occurred as crews were finalizing preparations for what is expected to be a massive gathering. The free concert, part of Shakira’s ongoing world tour, is set to take place on Copacabana Beach and has historically drawn millions of spectators from across the globe.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the cause of the incident, but the tragedy has already prompted renewed attention on safety conditions during large-scale event preparations.
As anticipation continues for the May 2 performance, the mood surrounding the event has shifted, with many reflecting on the risks faced by behind-the-scenes workers who make such global spectacles possible.
