Jenifer Lewis is turning the 2026 Met Gala into a bigger conversation about fame, wealth, and responsibility. The veteran actress, often called “The Mother of Black Hollywood,” questioned why celebrities still attended the glittering fashion event while Jeff Bezos faced backlash over Amazon job cuts, The Washington Post changes, and wider concerns. Her Instagram post quickly sparked support from fans who felt her frustration spoke to a larger disconnect between celebrity glamour and real-world pain.

Jenifer Lewis Calls Out Celebs Who Still Attended the Met Gala

The 1988 Beaches actress did not soften her message after Monday night’s Met Gala. In a video shared on Instagram, the 67-year-old actress said she had not initially watched the event until a friend called her with an update.

“Okay, so I hadn’t seen any of it,” she began. “I had been running around all day, and my girlfriend called and said, ‘Jenifer, they showed up anyway.’”

From there, Lewis turned the moment into a pointed musical critique. Sitting at the piano, she questioned how celebrities could walk the carpet while others were dealing with job losses and cuts to programs affecting children.

“They cut nearly 30,000 jobs and gutted the Washington Post. They showed up anyway? Postering and posing, hoping to be the most. They cut $1 billion in funding for children’s nutrition. And there they all were, vying for the next position. We’re at war, and so many people are dying.”

Her emotional reaction continued with a line that quickly became the heart of her message.

“I said to my girlfriend, ‘Tell me you’re lying.’ How much fame do we need, ya’ll? How much more fame?” The she ended with a silent “Wow.”

The comments under her post showed that many followers felt the same conflict. One wrote, “How much more??!!! You and I both said that WOW!!!! EXACTLY!!😢😢”

Another added, “And she knows that the folks she’s talking about know THEY ARE THE FOLKS she’s TALKING about,” while someone else pointed directly to the economic pain behind the outrage, writing, “300,000 Black women lost their jobs.”

One follower captured the emotional exhaustion behind the backlash, writing, “tell me you’re lying” makes me sad. Because ~ ive finally learned to NOT expect much. I KNEW they’d show up anyway. BUT! My BODY is literally tired of caring too much. I sitll have HOPE for us. but I’m not surprised anymore. and that. is. sad. ( also HI MOTHER ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️)”

Other Stars Have Also Questioned the Bezos Met Gala

The singer and mom-of-one was not the only public figure uneasy about the event. Forbes reported that Bella Hadid liked an Instagram video criticizing celebrities expected to attend the gala, especially those who might try to make political statements by wearing “ICE OUT” pins while still participating in an event sponsored by Bezos. Meredith Lynch, the poster of the video, stated that “Bezos is part of the reasons we’re in this [expletive].

Taraji P. Henson also reacted strongly to the same video, writing, “I am so confused by some ppl that are going. I am just like WTF ARE WE DOING!?!?!?!” She also reposted commentary about the wealth gap between Bezos and Amazon warehouse workers.

Cara Delevingne reportedly liked the same video, though she was listed as a co-host for the red carpet livestream. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also confirmed he would not attend, because he wants to focus on “affordability and making the most expensive city in the United States affordable.”

This is where Lewis’ criticism carries extra weight. The Met Gala has always mixed art, money, celebrity, and image-making, but Bezos’ presence sharpened the tension. When stars attend a luxury event tied to a billionaire under public scrutiny, the conversation is no longer just about fashion. It becomes a test of how much audiences expect celebrities to align their public values with their public appearances.

How Jeff Bezos Entered Fashion’s Inner Circle

Jeff Bezos’ connection to fashion did not begin this year. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that he first attended the Met Gala in 2012, when Amazon sponsored the event while pushing deeper into fashion retail. At the time, Bezos was still more closely associated with technology than couture.

Amazon Fashion launched with big ambitions, but the luxury world was not immediately convinced. Cathy Beaudoin, then president of Amazon Fashion, told The Seattle Times in 2013, “We want to be a great department store, like Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Saks.”

Over time, Amazon used sponsorships, partnerships, and donations to build credibility in the industry. In 2015, it sponsored New York Fashion Week’s menswear presentations. In 2020, the company donated $500,000 to the Council of Fashion Designers/Vogue Fashion Fund during the Covid pandemic.

Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos later became fixtures at fashion events, with Sánchez Bezos landing a digital Vogue cover for her wedding dress. Their rise inside fashion circles continued through philanthropy, designer relationships, and high-profile appearances.

Anna Wintour defended their involvement in the Met Gala during a CNN interview, calling the couple a “wonderful asset to the museum and the event.” She also described Sánchez Bezos as a “great lover of costume and obviously of fashion” and said she was “very grateful for her incredible generosity.”

Still, protesters pushed back against what some called the “Bezos Met Gala,” with anti-Bezos posters appearing around New York. For Lewis and the like-minded, the issue was not simply who wore what. It was about whether fame still means anything when glamour keeps moving, even while ordinary people are losing ground.
