The suspect at the center of a chaotic security scare during a high-profile Washington event has now been identified. Authorities say the incident unfolded rapidly, forcing a swift response from security personnel and interrupting a room filled with political figures and media. As more details emerge about the individual involved, attention has shifted to his background, raising questions about how the situation escalated.
White House Correspondents’ Dinner Disrupted By Sudden Security Scare
According to reports from CNN, law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. He was taken into custody after allegedly firing shots during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner held on April 25 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
The situation unfolded in dramatic fashion. Witnesses and live footage showed Secret Service agents rushing into the ballroom and escorting Donald Trump and members of his cabinet out of the venue after loud bangs were heard. Guests reportedly scrambled for safety, ducking under tables as confusion spread through the black-tie event.
Authorities later confirmed that the suspect injured a Secret Service agent during the incident. He now faces serious charges. According to the BBC, U.S. attorney Jeanine Pirro revealed that the charges include two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on federal officers.
President Trump addressed the situation publicly via Truth shortly after being escorted out. “Quite an evening in D.C.,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely.”
He added, “The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement.” In a follow-up statement, he confirmed that officials advised evacuation, noting, “Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately.”

A closer look at the suspect’s background
Beyond the shocking nature of the event, details about Allen’s personal and professional life have drawn significant attention. A LinkedIn profile bearing his name and image describes him as a “mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth.”
The profile indicates he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from California Institute of Technology in 2017, followed by a master’s degree in computer science in 2025 from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Caltech confirmed to Reuters that a person with his name graduated in 2017.
In addition to his academic credentials, Allen reportedly worked part-time as a teacher at C2 Education, a tutoring and test preparation company. A LinkedIn post from December 2024 even recognized him as “teacher of the month.”
He was also listed as a self-employed game developer. This highlights a background that blends education and technology. This contrast between his professional profile and the allegations has only deepened public curiosity about the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, typically a celebratory gathering of journalists, politicians, and celebrities, was ultimately overshadowed by the incident. While officials indicated plans to reschedule the event within 30 days, the night will likely be remembered for the moment security was breached and quickly restored.
With the suspect now in custody and facing federal charges, authorities are expected to continue piecing together what led to the alarming disruption at one of Washington’s most high-profile events.
