Few Hollywood stars have lived a life as fascinating as Pam Grier. Widely regarded as cinema’s first female action star, she built a groundbreaking career while capturing the hearts of some of entertainment’s biggest names. From athletes and comedians to music executives, Grier’s love life often made headlines. Yet despite several serious relationships and more than one near trip down the aisle, the actress never married and never had children, a reality she has reflected on with honesty over the years.

Pam Grier Came Close to Marriage More Than Once

Long before becoming an icon through films such as Coffy and Foxy Brown, Pam Grier was involved with future NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Their relationship became serious enough that marriage was discussed multiple times.

However, their future together depended on more than romance. Abdul-Jabbar had embraced Islam and wanted Grier to convert as well. In her memoir Foxy: My Life in Three Acts, the 77-year-old actress described him and his religion as being virtually inseparable. She also recalled the emotional ups and downs of their relationship, calling it a “roller coaster.”

Although the couple deeply cared for one another, their differing beliefs proved difficult to overcome. The relationship reached its breaking point when Abdul-Jabbar reportedly presented her with an ultimatum: commit to him and his faith or watch him marry someone else.

He followed through with that decision. Looking back, Grier admitted, “I was shattered by the breakup, although I must have known it was inevitable.”

The split left a lasting mark. For a period, she even avoided reading magazines that frequently featured coverage of her former partner.

Years later, Grier appeared to be on the verge of building a family with RCA Records executive Kevin Evans. The couple became engaged in the late 1990s and openly discussed plans for children. In interviews at the time, both spoke positively about their future together and the bond Grier had formed with Evans’ children from a previous relationship.

Yet the wedding never happened. In her memoir, the Jackie Brown star suggested that changes in Evans following her career resurgence ultimately damaged the relationship. The relationship that once seemed destined for marriage came to an end before they could walk down the aisle.

A Look Back at Pam Grier’s Most Famous Relationships

Grier’s dating history reads like a list of entertainment royalty. Among the most notable relationships was her romance with comedian Freddie Prinze.

According to Grier, Prinze wanted children, and the possibility of starting a family was discussed. However, she struggled with concerns about the realities that would come with parenthood. Both stars were enjoying successful careers, and she knew one of them would likely have to make sacrifices professionally if they became parents.

More importantly, she worried about Prinze’s struggles with substance use and mental health.

In Foxy, Grier explained her hesitation, writing, “How could I bring a child into the world with a parent as unstable as Freddie? I couldn’t do it to a child and I couldn’t do it to myself.”

Her concerns would later take on even greater significance. Prinze married Kathy Prinze and welcomed son Freddie Prinze Jr., but his life ended tragically in 1977.

Another famous relationship linked Grier to comedian Richard Pryor. The pair grew close while working together on Greased Lightning in 1977. Their relationship was passionate but complicated.

Grier later wrote about trying to help Pryor address his substance abuse issues. Although he experienced a period of sobriety, the progress did not last. Their romance eventually ended amid the challenges that surrounded his personal life.

Over the years, Grier was also romantically connected to boxing promoter Jimmie “Big Wheel” Wheeler and Soul Train creator Don Cornelius. While these relationships added to her already remarkable dating history, none ultimately developed into lifelong partnerships.

For someone who shared relationships with some of the biggest names of her era, Grier’s story serves as a reminder that fame and chemistry do not always translate into long-term compatibility.

Cinema’s First Female Action Star Learned To Embrace A Different Future

Although marriage and motherhood never became part of her life story, Grier has never hidden the fact that she once envisioned a very different future.

Reflecting on her younger years in Foxy, she wrote, “I thought that by now I would have a husband, some wonderful children, and an Ivy League education. These were my dreams, but the fact that they did not come true does not discourage me.”

Still, her feelings about not becoming a mother have remained complex.

“To be perfectly honest, some days I feel like I missed out on having children and creating my own nuclear family. On other days, I’m so overwhelmed with writing, acting and caring for my home and my animals, I wonder how I would ever manage having children,” she admitted.

Those reflections reveal a woman who has spent years balancing acceptance with curiosity about what might have been.

Grier’s life has never lacked purpose. Beyond her pioneering film career, she survived a stage-four cervical cancer diagnosis in 1988 after doctors initially gave her only 18 months to live. She recovered, remained active in entertainment, wrote a successful memoir, and devoted time to charitable and educational projects.

When asked why marriage never happened, Grier offered a perspective that seemed to bring everything together.

“Maybe my husband, partner, mate, was filmmaking,” she smiled.

For a woman who helped redefine what female action stars could be, perhaps that explanation makes perfect sense. While her path did not lead to a husband or children, it produced a groundbreaking career, unforgettable romances, and a legacy that continues to inspire generations of performers.
