The death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, who disappeared during a July 4, 2026, boat party off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, continues to draw national attention and raise questions. Wells’ body was found two days later, leading authorities to initially believe he had drowned amid strong rip currents. However, a preliminary independent autopsy commissioned by his family found the cause of death to be undetermined, prompting renewed calls for further investigation.
What Happened to Nolan Wells
On July 4, Wells joined friends for a raft-up gathering near Horn Island. He did not return with the group, and his body was recovered two days later, on July 6.
Authorities, including the Jackson County Coroner, said there were no immediate signs of foul play or visible trauma. The case quickly drew widespread attention because of the limited confirmed details, online speculation, questions surrounding deleted messages on Wells’ returned phone, and a $100,000 reward offered for information.
Wells’ family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, sought an independent examination to address concerns about potential injuries beyond drowning.
Details of the Independent Autopsy
The Wells family arranged a private autopsy, funded in part by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The examination was conducted by Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., president of the National Medical Association. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced the preliminary findings on July 22 during the NAACP National Convention in Chicago.
The autopsy included extensive dissections of the face, the back of the head and neck, the ribs, pelvis, and the soft tissues of the back, buttocks, arms, and legs. No fractures were found.
One of the most notable findings was a 12-by-8-inch area of red discoloration in the deep soft tissue at the back of the head, in the occipital region. There was no associated skin laceration or skull fracture. Because of the body’s state of decomposition, experts were unable to determine whether the discoloration resulted from an injury sustained before death.
Limitations and Undetermined Ruling
The report classified both the cause and manner of death as undetermined, pending further investigation.
However, several limitations affected the findings. Anterior neck structures, including the hyoid bone, were not provided because they had been retained by the state pathologist. As a result, experts were unable to complete a full posterior neck dissection or definitively rule out a neck injury.
The report also noted that the organs had already been removed during the official autopsy, preventing examiners from checking for water in the lungs or examining the stomach contents. Toxicology results from the state were also unavailable.
Because of these limitations, the independent examination could neither confirm drowning nor rule out other possible causes of death.
Official Investigation Status
Mississippi authorities completed their own autopsy through the State Medical Examiner’s Office, but the official findings, including toxicology results, have not yet been released publicly.
The Wells family has expressed frustration over the lack of transparency as the investigation continues.
