After years away from major film roles, Ellen DeGeneres is stepping back into the spotlight with a project that reconnects her to one of her most beloved characters. The comedian, once at the center of a workplace controversy that reshaped her public image, is now preparing for a return that signals a new chapter. With familiar territory ahead and lingering questions behind her, the moment marks a cautious but notable revival.

Ellen DeGeneres Returns to Familiar Waters With Dory Role

According to Deadline, DeGeneres is set to reprise her role as Dory in a new short film tied to the Finding Nemo franchise. The character, first introduced in 2003’s Finding Nemo and later central to 2016’s Finding Dory, remains one of her most recognizable performances. The sequel earned over $1 billion globally, cementing its place among the highest-grossing animated films.

This upcoming project marks her first major film role since Finding Dory, arriving years after her daytime television run came to an end. While she continued appearing on television until around 2021, her visibility declined following widespread allegations tied to her talk show.

The controversy began in March 2020 after a viral tweet invited stories about her behavior, eventually leading to a detailed exposé by BuzzFeed News. The report included claims of workplace bullying, racism, and misconduct from former employees. By August 2020, WarnerMedia launched an internal investigation that resulted in the dismissal of several top producers. DeGeneres also issued a formal apology to staff and later addressed viewers directly.

Her long-running show officially ended on May 26, 2022, closing a 19-season chapter that had once defined daytime television.

A Comeback Shaped by Controversy and Reflection

In the aftermath, DeGeneres spoke candidly about the experience. Reflecting in 2022, she told The Hollywood Reporter, “I have to just trust that whatever happened during that time, which was obviously very, very difficult, happened for a reason.” She added, “I think that I learned a lot, and there were some things that came up that I was shocked and surprised by. It was eye-opening, but I just trust that that had to happen.”

Despite the backlash, she returned briefly with her 2024 Netflix special Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, though it received mixed to negative reactions.

Outside of her career, DeGeneres also made headlines for her personal life. She and her wife, Portia de Rossi, relocated to the UK following the 2024 U.S. election. Speaking to broadcaster Richard Bacon, she recalled the moment they decided to stay: “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in’. And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here’.”

She also praised her surroundings, saying, “It’s absolutely beautiful. We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.” She continued, “It’s clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

The couple eventually split their time between the UK and California after purchasing a Montecito property. Now, with a return to a familiar role, DeGeneres appears to be reentering Hollywood on her own terms. Whether the comeback fully restores her standing remains to be seen, but the next step is clearly underway.
