When “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” premiered on NBC on Sept. 10, 1990, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air cast was led by Will Smith, who was better known as half of the Grammy-winning rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince than as an actor.

Over six seasons, the sitcom turned Smith into a television star while making Carlton Banks, Hilary Banks, Ashley Banks, Geoffrey and Uncle Phil familiar faces to millions of viewers. The cast eventually went in dramatically different directions, from blockbuster movies and television hosting to theater, writing and education.

The series remains part of pop culture decades later. According to a recent Deadline report, Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s early story is even being developed into a new scripted project titled “215.” Here is where the original cast went after leaving Bel-Air, including the story behind the sitcom’s most famous cast change.

Will Smith Went From the Fresh Prince to a Movie Superstar

Will Smith played a fictionalized version of himself, a Philadelphia teenager sent to live with his wealthy relatives in Bel-Air after getting into trouble back home. The sitcom became Smith’s launchpad into movies.

Before “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” had even finished its run, he had begun building a film career with movies including “Bad Boys” and “Independence Day.” “Men in Black,” “Ali,” “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “King Richard” followed, with Smith winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for “King Richard.”

His career eventually came full circle with Peacock’s dramatic reimagining “Bel-Air,” which Smith executive-produced. In December 2025, he made a surprise appearance in the show’s series finale opposite Jabari Banks, the actor who played the new version of Will.

Smith also returned to music. His 2025 album “Based on a True Story” was his first full-length album in 20 years and featured longtime collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff, according to The Associated Press.

Where Is Alfonso Ribeiro Now?

Alfonso Ribeiro played Will’s buttoned-up cousin Carlton Banks for all six seasons. The character became particularly associated with his enthusiastic dancing, including the routine that fans eventually dubbed “The Carlton.”

Ribeiro never left television behind. After acting, directing and hosting work, he competed on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2014 and won Season 19 with professional partner Witney Carson.

He later returned to the ballroom in a different role. Ribeiro currently co-hosts “Dancing With the Stars” alongside Julianne Hough and also hosts “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” ABC’s 2026 schedule has him leading Season 37 of “AFV.”

His “Fresh Prince” history has even followed him into the ballroom in 2026 because one of this season’s contestants is someone he has known since she was a child: his former TV sister Tatyana Ali.

Tatyana Ali Is Back on TV With Her Former TV Brother

Tatyana Ali was only a child when she began playing Ashley Banks, the youngest Banks daughter. As Ashley grew up on screen, the show also showcased Ali’s musical ability. After “Fresh Prince,” she launched a recording career and released her debut album, “Kiss the Sky,” in 1998.

The album included “Daydreamin’,” while Ali later continued acting in projects including “The Young and the Restless.” She also graduated from Harvard University and has expanded her career into writing, producing and advocacy.

ABC describes Ali as an actress, singer, writer, entrepreneur and maternal health advocate who currently has a recurring role on “Abbott Elementary.” In 2026, Ali joined Season 35 of “Dancing With the Stars”, placing her back on television with Ribeiro, except this time he is hosting while she competes.

Karyn Parsons Built a Second Career Telling Black History

Karyn Parsons made Hilary Banks memorable as the stylish and frequently self-absorbed oldest Banks sibling. Her post-“Fresh Prince” acting work included starring opposite Damon Wayans in “Major Payne.” But one of the most distinctive chapters of her post-sitcom life happened away from traditional Hollywood.

In 2005, Parsons founded Sweet Blackberry, an organization devoted to introducing children to lesser-known stories about Black historical figures. Its projects have featured narration from performers including Queen Latifah, Chris Rock, Alfre Woodard and Laurence Fishburne.

Parsons also became an author. Her books include “How High the Moon” and “Clouds Over California,” and in June 2026 she released her young adult novel “Blue Beach,” a historical mystery set in 1929 Santa Monica. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers lists its publication date as June 9, 2026.

James Avery’s Uncle Phil Became the Heart of the Show

James Avery played Philip Banks, the stern but deeply caring father who frequently found himself trying to keep Will and the rest of the Banks household under control. Avery brought extensive stage and voice-acting experience to Uncle Phil. Outside “Fresh Prince,” his credits included voicing Shredder in the 1987 “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” animated series, along with decades of film and television appearances.

Avery died on Dec. 31, 2013, following complications from open-heart surgery, according to the Los Angeles Times. His former castmates continued to speak warmly about his impact.

After Avery’s death, Smith remembered the actor as someone who gave him lessons not only in acting but in life, while Ribeiro described Avery as a second father, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 2020 “Fresh Prince” reunion also included a tribute to Avery, underscoring how central he remained to the cast years after the series ended.

Joseph Marcell Never Left Acting Behind

Joseph Marcell played Geoffrey Butler, whose deadpan responses to the Banks family’s chaos made him one of the show’s most reliable sources of comedy. The role made Marcell widely recognizable in the United States, but his career has always stretched beyond sitcom television.

The British actor has maintained deep ties to theater, including Shakespearean work, while continuing to appear in movies and television. He also became one of several original cast members to enter the reimagined “Bel-Air” universe, appearing as a different character in the Peacock drama.

More recently, Marcell played Father Mackie in Netflix’s 2025 film “The Thursday Murder Club,” joining an ensemble led by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie. Netflix lists Marcell among the movie’s cast.

Why Were There Two Aunt Vivs on ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’?

Few sitcom recastings have generated as much discussion as the change from Janet Hubert to Daphne Maxwell Reid as Vivian Banks. Hubert originated Aunt Viv and played the character throughout the first three seasons. Reid took over beginning with Season 4 and remained with the show through its 1996 finale.

For decades, the circumstances surrounding Hubert’s departure were the subject of conflicting public accounts and tension between Hubert and Smith. At the time of her departure in 1993, Hubert told the Los Angeles Times that NBC had offered her 13 episodes of work instead of the previous season’s 22 while keeping the same per-episode rate. The two finally sat down together for the show’s 30th-anniversary reunion in 2020 and discussed what had happened.

Hubert said during the reunion that she was not simply fired. She explained that she had been offered a new contract involving reduced work at a time when she had a newborn and her husband was unemployed. She declined the offer, and the role was subsequently recast. Smith acknowledged his own perspective and behavior at the time and apologized as they reconciled after 27 years of estrangement, as detailed by the Los Angeles Times.

The reunion also produced another remarkable moment: Hubert and Reid met each other for the first time. Their versions of Vivian were noticeably different, but that distinction is best understood as two actresses bringing their own approaches to the same role. The Washington Post examined the differences between the portrayals, including Hubert’s more assertive interpretation and the warmer, more home-centered presence associated with Reid’s version.

What Happened to Janet Hubert, the Original Aunt Viv?

Hubert’s Aunt Viv was given several memorable opportunities to establish a life beyond being the Banks family matriarch. Moments particularly associated with her portrayal included Vivian teaching Will and Carlton about Black history and an episode in which she stunned younger dancers with her skill in a dance class. The Washington Post highlighted those aspects of Hubert’s performance while examining the character’s evolution.

Hubert continued acting after the series, with later appearances in projects including “General Hospital,” “Pose” and “The Ms. Pat Show.”

She eventually returned to the wider “Fresh Prince” universe as well. In 2025, Hubert appeared during the fourth and final season of “Bel-Air” as Iris, becoming another original cast member to take on a new role in the dramatic reimagining.

Where Is Daphne Maxwell Reid Now?

Reid stepped into an unusually difficult position in 1993: taking over an established character on an already successful television series.

Rather than attempt to reproduce Hubert’s performance, Reid has said she approached Vivian through her own personality. In an interview about her time on the series, Reid explained that she was not hired to imitate Hubert but to become part of the existing Banks family.

Reid remained Aunt Viv for the final three seasons and later pursued interests including photography, fashion, writing and design in addition to acting.

She also appeared on “Bel-Air”, playing a new character connected to the Art Council alongside Vernee Watson-Johnson, who had portrayed Will’s mother, Vy, on the original sitcom.

Reid has remained creatively active beyond that appearance. Her official website highlights her work across acting, photography, design and writing and lists the 2026 film “The Cashier” among her screen credits.

The two performances therefore belong to the same character without being interchangeable, something Reid herself has emphasized rather than treating one portrayal as an attempt to recreate the other.

Where Is DJ Jazzy Jeff Now?

Jeffrey Townes, better known as DJ Jazzy Jeff, already had years of history with Smith before occasionally showing up at the Banks mansion as Will’s friend Jazz.

The running joke of Uncle Phil throwing Jazz out of the house became one of the sitcom’s best-known visual gags, but Townes’ main career remained music.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince had already found success before the show, including the Grammy-winning “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” and their partnership continued beyond television.

Jeff remains an active DJ decades later. His official website documents new mixes, livestreams and 2026 performances, including European dates during the summer.

He also reunited musically with Smith on the 2025 album “Based on a True Story,” keeping a partnership that predates “Fresh Prince” alive more than three decades after the sitcom premiered.

What Happened to Ross Bagley?

Ross Bagley joined “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” later in its run as Nicky Banks, Philip and Vivian’s youngest child.

The young actor became familiar to 1990s audiences beyond the sitcom as Buckwheat in the 1994 movie “The Little Rascals.” He reunited with Smith on screen in the blockbuster “Independence Day,” playing Dylan, the son of Vivica A. Fox’s character.

Bagley did not maintain the same long-term public acting career as many of his former co-stars. He did, however, return alongside his former castmates for the 2020 “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion special, where he is listed among the reunion cast.

His relative absence from Hollywood since his years as a child actor makes him one of the cast members whose adult life has remained more private, and there is little need to turn that privacy into speculation.

The ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ Cast Keeps Finding Its Way Back Together

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” ended in 1996, but the cast has repeatedly returned to the world that made them a television family.

The 2020 reunion brought most of the surviving principal cast together and finally created space for Smith and Hubert to address their long-running fallout. Peacock’s “Bel-Air” then created another bridge between generations, with Hubert, Reid, Ali and Marcell appearing as new characters across the reimagined series.

Smith eventually joined them in the 2025 series finale, but his appearance was deliberately different. His character was never formally identified and was called only “OG” by Jabari Banks’ Will. “Bel-Air” showrunner Carla Banks Waddles told TVLine that the meaning of Smith’s cameo was intentionally “open to interpretation”.

Parsons is publishing new books, Marcell continues acting, DJ Jazzy Jeff remains behind the turntables, Ribeiro continues his television hosting career and Smith is still moving between film, television and music.

More than 30 years after viewers first met the Banks family, the cast’s paths may look very different, but “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” continues to connect them.
