Hayden Panettiere’s death investigation has taken another significant turn nearly a month after the “Heroes” actress was found unresponsive in South Carolina.
Multiple law enforcement sources now believe Panettiere took an oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl on the morning of her death, according to TMZ. Investigators are focusing on a person described by sources as her longtime Los Angeles drug dealer, who allegedly supplied her with black-market prescription drugs.
The Drug Enforcement Administration is now working to trace the suspected fatal pill back to its source. However, Panettiere’s toxicology results remain pending, meaning authorities have not officially confirmed that fentanyl caused her death.
Hayden Panettiere’s Alleged Drug Dealer Is Now a DEA Target
TMZ reported on Sept. 14 that law enforcement sources connected to the investigation believe Panettiere had a longtime dealer in Los Angeles who supplied her with several black-market prescription medications, including oxycodone.
According to the outlet, Panettiere took several drugs she allegedly obtained from the dealer while traveling from Los Angeles to South Carolina on Aug. 15, one day before her death. Investigators believe she took another oxycodone pill the following morning. Their working theory is that the pill contained fentanyl. The DEA’s Los Angeles office is reportedly attempting to establish the extent of Panettiere’s relationship with the alleged dealer and determine where the suspected pill originated.
The investigation into her drug supply had been intensifying before the latest development. The Los Angeles Times reported days earlier that federal authorities were focusing on the source of drugs and medications potentially connected to Panettiere’s death. No dealer has been publicly identified or charged in connection with her death.
Brian Hickerson Has Spoken With Federal Investigators
Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, has also met with the DEA as investigators attempt to reconstruct what happened before she died. A source close to the investigation told People that Hickerson met with federal authorities and that investigators interviewed other people. Hickerson was staying with Panettiere in Greenville when she died.
According to the police report, Hickerson showed a responding officer a bag containing medications Panettiere had been taking. TMZ subsequently reported that Hickerson administered Narcan to Panettiere after she became unresponsive but before paramedics arrived.
Authorities have not established publicly that the medications Hickerson showed first responders included the oxycodone pill investigators now suspect was laced with fentanyl. The DEA had already joined the Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office investigation within days of Panettiere’s death. Authorities have not accused Hickerson of causing her death.
Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Still Awaits Toxicology Results
Despite the latest development, Hayden Panettiere’s cause of death has not officially been determined. Panettiere was found unresponsive at the Greenville residence where she was temporarily staying on Aug. 16. Emergency services responded to a reported cardiac arrest at approximately 1:51 p.m. Paramedics performed advanced cardiac life support but were unable to revive her. Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. She was 36.
An autopsy performed the following day found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said her cause and manner of death would remain pending until additional studies were completed. Police also said their preliminary investigation revealed no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
The latest reporting gives investigators a more specific theory about what may have happened in Panettiere’s final hours. However, law enforcement sources cautioned that their theory depends on the outstanding toxicology results. Those findings will be crucial in determining whether fentanyl or other substances were present in Panettiere’s system and what role they may have played in her death.
Why Tracing Panettiere’s Suspected Final Pill Matters
The investigation has expanded considerably since the late actress was found unresponsive on Aug. 16. What initially began with investigators examining the circumstances inside the South Carolina residence has increasingly shifted toward determining where the drugs Panettiere allegedly possessed came from and who supplied them.
If toxicology supports investigators’ fentanyl theory, tracing the suspected oxycodone pill could become a critical part of determining whether another person bears criminal responsibility. Federal prosecutors have previously pursued suppliers when fentanyl-laced drugs were linked to fatal overdoses.
Following Mac Miller’s 2018 death, for example, multiple men were prosecuted after investigators traced counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl to people who supplied drugs to the rapper before his death.
Panettiere’s case remains separate, and the existence of a suspected supplier does not establish criminal liability. Investigators would first need evidence connecting a particular source to the drugs involved in her death. Toxicology could also help determine whether the substance investigators are attempting to trace actually contributed to her death.
For now, the investigation remains active, with no supplier publicly charged and Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death still undetermined.
