Mary J. Blige Partners With Primary Wave on Her Catalog

Updated on :

Primary Wave Music announced on Oct. 26 that it is partnering with Mary J. Blige on her catalog of compositions and recordings, giving her team access to its marketing and publishing operation, the company said. Primary Wave calls the arrangement a partnership and states no price, ownership transfer or length of term. On the public record, it is a marketing and publishing agreement for a catalog that has sold more than 50 million records.

What the Mary J. Blige Catalog Deal Covers

The partnership covers her compositions and recordings across a career that began with “What’s the 411?” in 1992. Primary Wave lists 15 studio albums, two live albums and 83 singles, including “Family Affair,” “My Life,” “Mary Jane (All Night Long),” “You Bring Me Joy,” “Be Happy,” “Be Without You” and “I Can Love You.” The company said the work could include marketing new music, branding, digital campaigns and sync placements, the licensing of songs for film, television and advertising. It did not name a specific project.

Who Else is on the Primary Wave Roster

Primary Wave’s site describes the company as the leading independent publisher of iconic and legendary music and lists 20 artists. They include Whitney Houston, The Notorious B.I.G., Prince, Luther Vandross, James Brown, Ray Charles, Stevie Nicks, Britney Spears and Axl Rose. Blige’s partnership heads the site’s list of recent announcements, which also includes partnerships with the estates of Robert Palmer and Wilson Pickett and with Daniel Jones of Savage Garden. It also lists a Whitney Houston Barbie made with the singer’s estate and Mattel. The last item shows what the company means by marketing a catalog.

Why “My Life” Matters to the Catalog

Blige’s 1994 album “My Life” is on the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden named it among 25 selections on April 9, 2025, and the Library said the album reflects on her hardships and her aspirations for love and happiness. The registry stood at 675 titles after that class. The registry honor came 31 years after the album’s release, a calculation from the two dates.

The Numbers in Primary Wave’s Announcement

The announcement lists nine Grammy wins from 37 nominations, 12 Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards and 12 NAACP Image Awards. Nine wins from 37 nominations is a win rate of about 24%, a calculation from the two figures. Her honors include a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2018 and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.

What Primary Wave Said

Natalia Nastaskin, Primary Wave’s chief content officer, said she became a “Day 1” Blige fan when she heard “You Remind Me” on New York’s KISS-FM, and called the partnership with “the Queen herself” an honor for her and the team. The announcement carries no quote from Blige or her representatives. Blige’s Las Vegas residency, “Mary J. Blige: My Life, My Story,” runs at Dolby Live at Park MGM from May 2026 through February 2027, the announcement says. Her newest single is “Want Love.”
