Prince Harry’s latest trip to the United Kingdom was expected to focus on preparations for the 2027 Invictus Games, but the visit has instead become overshadowed by a fresh disagreement involving Buckingham Palace. Conflicting explanations over accommodation arrangements have fueled new speculation about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the royal household. While Harry remains committed to his scheduled engagements, differing accounts from both sides have turned his return into another closely watched chapter in the ongoing royal saga.

Prince Harry Palace Return Sparks Dispute Over Royal Accommodation

As Prince Harry prepares to return to London on his own, a disagreement has emerged over whether he accepted an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace during his visit.

The Duke is traveling to Britain for engagements marking the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, discussions surrounding his accommodation have become the center of attention after his representatives and Buckingham Palace shared conflicting versions of events.

According to Harry’s spokesperson, King Charles had offered the Duke accommodation at Buckingham Palace, and Harry accepted the invitation after finalizing private security arrangements. However, the spokesperson claimed the offer was later withdrawn.

“It is therefore disappointing that the offer has now been withdrawn,” the spokesperson said, adding that Buckingham Palace cited Tuesday’s expected court ruling in Harry’s legal battle with Associated Newspapers as the reason for the change. The spokesperson also argued that palace officials had been aware for days that the judgment was approaching, making the explanation difficult to understand.

Buckingham Palace sources, however, disputed that account.

According to palace insiders, the accommodation offer remained available until the end of last week. They said repeated requests were made for confirmation, but Harry did not formally accept the invitation before the deadline required to prepare for his arrival.

The palace also maintained that correspondence received on Saturday morning formally declined the King’s offer. Although Harry later requested to stay for part of the visit, officials said staffing and hospitality arrangements could no longer be organized in time.

Security Concerns Changed The Plan

The accommodation disagreement follows earlier changes to Prince Harry’s travel plans involving Meghan Markle and their children.

Harry had reportedly hoped Meghan, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet would accompany him to Britain for the first time since 2022. The visit would have allowed Archie and Lilibet to spend time in the country where their father grew up and potentially reunite with King Charles.

Those plans changed after the Duke learned that police protection would only apply while the family remained on royal property.

According to Harry’s spokesperson, the Duke then focused on arranging private security after the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) declined to extend police protection beyond royal residences.

The spokesperson maintained that Harry acted responsibly throughout the process by securing alternative protection before formally accepting the King’s accommodation offer.

Palace officials, meanwhile, said the timing of Harry’s pending court case created another complication.

Sources explained that Tuesday’s legal ruling involving Associated Newspapers meant the King’s position could not appear compromised while litigation involving his younger son remained active.

Despite the disagreement, palace sources stressed that accommodation at a royal residence would remain available for Harry and his family during a future visit.

The Tension Isn’t Going Away

Although the differing accounts have generated fresh headlines, Prince Harry’s itinerary remains unchanged.

The Duke is expected to attend a series of engagements connected to the Invictus Games while awaiting the outcome of his legal case against the publisher of the Daily Mail.

Harry’s spokesperson also questioned why several explanations had emerged regarding the accommodation issue.

According to the spokesperson, initial briefings suggested Harry simply failed to accept the invitation. Later explanations referenced timing, staffing concerns, and the pending court judgment, creating what the Duke’s team viewed as inconsistent messaging.

While Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet will not join Harry in London, the possibility remains that they could travel to other parts of Britain later in the week.

Their absence from the capital also does not eliminate the prospect of Archie and Lilibet seeing King Charles during the trip. In addition, there has been speculation that the family could visit Althorp House, where Princess Diana is buried, although no such plans have been confirmed.

For now, Prince Harry’s anticipated return to Britain has become defined less by the Invictus Games and more by conflicting accounts over security, accommodation, and negotiations that unfolded behind palace walls. As both sides continue to defend their versions of events, the visit has once again placed the Duke’s relationship with the royal household firmly under public scrutiny.
