Behind the Mask is exploring the complicated realities of female friendship, addiction and emotional vulnerability through the story of two women whose close bond is tested by secrets and personal struggles.
The new vertical drama series stars Rah Ali as Mia and Felicia Daniel, popularly known as Feeva D, as Tanya, two women who develop a sister-like friendship after a chance encounter at a restaurant. However, what begins as a warm connection gradually becomes more troubling as Mia notices signs that Tanya may be struggling with substance use.
With the first three parts released, the series has introduced viewers to a story about friendship, hidden pain and the difficulty of helping someone who may not believe they can be helped. Behind the scenes, Media Executive Rah Ali and producer Silk White have also opened up about the experience of bringing the project to life, from unexpected emotional moments to demanding filming schedules and a few disagreements over how closely the actors should follow the script.
Rah Ali’s Vertical Series, Behind the Mask, Follows Mia and Tanya’s Complicated Friendship

Mia and Tanya’s friendship begins with a meeting at one of Mia’s favorite restaurants. Although they have previously crossed paths through mutual friends and overlapping social circles, the encounter marks their first proper introduction.
Tanya initially comes across as kind, warm and friendly. Their connection quickly grows into a sister-like relationship, and the two women become inseparable. However, as their friendship deepens, Mia begins noticing troubling behavior that makes her question whether Tanya is hiding something.
In one scene, Mia walks into a bathroom and finds Tanya visibly intoxicated. Before Mia could say anything, Tanya insists that she is fine. As Tanya leaves, a container that appears to hold drugs falls from her belongings without her noticing. The moment adds to Mia’s growing concern that her friend may be struggling with addiction. Another scene offers a more emotional glimpse into Tanya’s state of mind.
“Do you ever just want to disappear?” Tanya asks Mia while staggering. When Mia asks what she means, Tanya explains that she wants to stop being what everyone else expects her to be. Mia encourages Tanya to focus on her own happiness and embrace who she truly is.
But Tanya’s struggles appear to run deeper than the pressure of meeting other people’s expectations. When Mia offers to help, Tanya responds, “I don’t think anybody can help me.” The statement suggests that Tanya may feel trapped by her circumstances, even as someone close to her tries to offer support.
Later, Tanya tells Mia that she cannot sleep because her mind will not switch off. She is trying to figure out who she is outside her current situation before she runs out of time. The released storyline also shows Tanya avoiding certain people. In one tense moment, she suddenly grabs Mia after apparently spotting someone approaching.
The identities of those individuals and the reason Tanya appears frightened remain unclear. Together, these moments introduce a central question running through Behind the Mask: What happens when someone recognizes that a friend needs help but cannot convince that person to accept it?
Rah Ali Reveals the Vulnerability Behind Her Role as Mia
Although Behind the Mask tells a fictional story, Rah believes its themes reflect situations that many people encounter in their everyday lives. During a behind-the-scenes interview alongside Silk White, the mini-series producer, the actress was asked what audiences might see from her in the series that they do not usually get to witness publicly. “I think vulnerability,” Rah replied.
She explained that portraying situations rooted in recognizable experiences can sometimes produce unexpected emotions. “I think that when you’re connecting with real-life situations that can happen to folks from day to day, sometimes it can bring out emotions that you didn’t anticipate,” she said.
For Rah, the series is not simply about dramatic confrontations or complicated relationships. It also provides an opportunity to explore the emotions that people often keep hidden. Through Mia and Tanya’s friendship, the story examines the tension between wanting to protect someone and recognizing that good intentions alone may not resolve their struggles.
Tanya’s reluctance to discuss her suspected addiction also raises questions about shame, hopelessness and the difficulty of asking for support. Her outwardly friendly personality contrasts with the emotional distress she reveals in private moments. Rah also discussed how the series touches on experiences involving friendships, love, lies, infidelity and other challenges that people may recognize from their own lives. The actress hopes those familiar situations will help audiences connect with the characters rather than watch their problems unfold.
Rah Ali Admits She Didn’t Know Her Lines During Filming
While Behind the Mask tackles serious subjects on-screen, the experience of filming it came with some humorous behind-the-scenes revelations. One of the biggest challenges involved Rah’s preparation for her scenes. Silk, who has experience producing traditional film projects, approached the production with expectations about scripts, dialogue and continuity. Rah, however, had a different understanding of how the vertical series would be filmed.
During their interview, she jokingly accused Silk of avoiding the subject of her preparation. “He really wants to say that I didn’t know my lines,” Rah admitted. She explained that she had expected the cast to improvise rather than memorize every line exactly as written. In fact, when fellow actress Feeva D, who portrays Tanya, asked whether she needed to study her lines, Rah told her no.
Silk explained that this approach created challenges when filming scenes that required multiple takes. If an actor delivered different dialogue in each take, he noted, editors could struggle to combine the footage without disrupting the scene’s continuity. For someone accustomed to more structured film productions, the experience required adjustments. Nevertheless, Silk said the cast responded to his guidance and worked to complete the project.
Rah acknowledged the difference between their approaches, describing Silk as a professional who takes filmmaking seriously while admitting that she was approaching the experience with a more spontaneous attitude. Rather than hiding those differences, the pair discussed them openly, showing how the production became a learning experience for everyone involved.
The Cast Faced Long Filming Days and Unexpected Challenges

Another behind-the-scenes revelation concerned the demanding production schedule. Rah explained that filming alongside Feeva D felt natural because the two actresses were already friends in real life. That familiarity helped them portray Mia and Tanya’s close relationship. However, Rah said the experience became more exhausting as filming continued. “He slaved us,” she joked about Silk, claiming that the cast sometimes worked 16-hour days.
Silk responded that long filming days were nothing unusual in his profession. He explained that productions often involve 12- to 16-hour workdays, even if Rah was less accustomed to that schedule. Their exchange highlighted the different experiences and expectations they brought to the project. Rah joked about being ready to wind down much earlier in the evening, while Silk remained focused on completing the scheduled work.
The producer also playfully suggested that some of the long days were partly connected to waiting for Rah to finish getting her hair and makeup done. Despite their teasing, both agreed that they enjoyed working together. The cast and crew also encountered difficulties caused by Miami’s rainy weather. According to Rah, filming during the rainy season interfered with some scenes, adding another complication to an already demanding production.
Still, the challenges did not prevent the team from completing the series. For Silk, the experience reinforced the importance of preparation and consistency. For Rah, it demonstrated how much work goes into producing scripted content, even when the finished episodes are relatively short.
How Rah Ali and Silk White Brought Behind the Mask to Life

The collaboration behind Behind the Mask began before Rah and Silk had ever worked together. During their interview, Rah explained that she first became interested in Silk after reading about him in The Wall Street Journal. She said she was impressed by his journey and his ability to turn difficult personal circumstances into an opportunity to build something meaningful. Rather than simply admiring his story, Rah decided to reach out.
She contacted Silk, arranged a conversation and shared her idea for a vertical drama series. Silk recalled being struck by her genuine enthusiasm and willingness to pursue a creative project outside her usual experience. Although the two had to coordinate their schedules, they eventually came together to make the production happen. Their collaboration also reflects a broader interest in vertical storytelling, a format designed for viewing on mobile devices.
Both acknowledged that creating this type of content was different from their previous experiences. Rah explained that one reason she wanted to discuss the production process publicly was to encourage other people who might be interested in creating their own vertical series. She emphasized that aspiring creators should not feel discouraged because they lack extensive resources or experience. The pair also expressed interest in working with other creators, brands and businesses on future projects.
When asked what audiences should expect from Behind the Mask, Rah offered a candid response. “If you watch this series expecting perfection,” she said, viewers would be surprised. Silk agreed that the project had been an opportunity to experiment and learn.
“Y’all ain’t seen nothing yet,” he teased while discussing what could come next. For now, Behind the Mask brings together two connected stories: Mia and Tanya’s increasingly complicated friendship on-screen, and the creative partnership that brought their world to life behind the camera.
As the series continues, viewers will have an opportunity to discover more about Tanya’s struggles, the people she appears to be avoiding and whether Mia can reach the friend she desperately wants to help.
