Lauryn Hill’s Husband: Why She and Rohan Marley Never Married

Lauryn Hill does not have a husband. She never married Rohan Marley, or anyone else, for that matter. The two were together from 1996 to roughly 2009, had five children, and built a life that looked like a marriage from the outside. But no marriage certificate exists on the public record. Rohan has since married someone else. Lauryn has remained single.

That gap between perception and reality is the whole story here. The Marley name, five kids, and a decade-plus relationship created an assumption that stuck. Rohan even appeared alongside her at events and on camera during her MTV Unplugged taping, the kind of visibility that reinforces the “husband” label without anyone ever confirming it.

QUICK FACTS

  • Legal husband: None. Lauryn Hill has never been publicly married.
  • Longtime partner: Rohan Marley (1996–~2009)
  • Children together: Five, Zion, Selah, Joshua (YG Marley), John, and Sara
  • Total children: Six. Her youngest, Micah (born 2011), has a different, publicly unidentified father.
  • Rohan’s current status: Married to Brazilian model Barbara Fialho in March 2019

Were Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley Ever Married?

No. They were never legally married. Wikipedia’s entry on Rohan Marley states it directly: “While Hill sometimes referred to Marley as her husband, they never legally married.”

Lauryn did call Rohan her husband in interviews and public settings over the years. That language traveled. Outlets picked it up, repeated it, and eventually, the word “husband” got attached to almost every mention of Rohan in connection to Lauryn. But referring to someone as your husband and being legally married are two different things, and in this case, the distinction matters because it’s the entire reason this question gets searched.

What complicates it further: when Lauryn and Rohan got together in 1996, Rohan was still technically married to his first wife, Geraldine Khawly. A 2003 Rolling Stone report suggested he had never divorced Khawly. Rohan later produced a 1996 Haitian divorce decree to counter that claim. Either way, his first marriage overlapping with the start of his relationship with Lauryn is a detail most coverage quietly skips.

Who Is Rohan Marley?

Rohan Marley is one of Bob Marley’s sons, born May 19, 1972, in Kingston, Jamaica. His mother is Janet Hunt, not Rita Marley, which makes him one of several children Bob fathered outside his marriage. After his father died of cancer in 1981, Rohan moved between his mother’s home and his paternal grandmother, Cedella Booker’s, house before eventually settling in Florida.

He played linebacker at the University of Miami and later for the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Rough Riders. After football, he moved into business, most notably founding Marley Coffee in 2007, which he built into an international brand rooted in Jamaican Blue Mountain farming.

Rohan met Lauryn in 1996 while on tour with his brothers. In an interview on Drink Champs, he said Lauryn was “very instrumental in the business side of me.” Their relationship produced five children before it ended.

How Many Children Does Lauryn Hill Have?

Six. Five with Rohan Marley, and one, Micah, whose father has never been publicly confirmed.

Here’s the timeline, per IMDB and People:

  • Zion David Marley, born August 3, 1997. The inspiration behind “To Zion” on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lauryn told the Los Angeles Times in 1998 that having Zion “helped me realize what was really important.” He became a father himself in 2017.
  • Selah Louise Marley, born November 12, 1998. She works as a model and singer, with campaigns for Dior, Tommy Hilfiger, and Beyoncé’s Ivy Park. She released her debut EP, Star Power, in 2021.
  • Joshua Omaru Marley (YG Marley) was born on January 26, 2002. His single “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” went viral on TikTok and peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first reggae song to chart in seven years. Lauryn brought him on stage at Coachella 2024 to open her set.
  • John Nesta Marley was born in 2003. Named after Bob Marley’s middle name (Robert Nesta Marley). The most private of the children.
  • Sara Marley was born on January 2, 2008. The youngest of Lauryn and Rohan’s children together. She’s pursuing music and celebrated her 16th birthday with a 1920s-themed party at Cipriani in New York, per Hello! Magazine.
  • Micah Hill, born July 2011. The father’s identity remains publicly unknown. When rumors swirled after his birth, Lauryn wrote on her website: “Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our five children together remain a joy to both of us.”

That statement is worth sitting with. She said “our five children”, not six. She acknowledged the separation without explaining it, corrected the abandonment narrative, and left the rest private. That’s been her approach to public life for over two decades.

What Happened Between Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley?

The relationship ended somewhere between 2008 and 2011, depending on the source. Wikipedia places it in 2009. Some outlets say 2008. What’s clear is that by the time Micah was born in July 2011, Lauryn and Rohan were no longer together.

They lived apart for most of their relationship, which is a detail that often gets buried. Hello! Magazine noted that the couple lived separately for the majority of their time together. That context changes how you read their story. This was never a conventional domestic arrangement, even when it was working.

Rohan addressed the breakup in a 2012 interview with the UK publication The Voice: “As a man, there are certain things I don’t accept. And it just so happened that I didn’t accept certain things [in the relationship]. It doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, or I’m a bad person, it just didn’t work out.”

He also told Open Magazine: “I feel sad that I loved her so much and I faltered in expressing it to her somehow. It was my fault that she did not understand how I felt, and it was sad that we did not work out in that relationship sense. I was heartbroken for a long time.”

Lauryn never publicly explained why they separated. She never owed anyone that explanation.

What she did do: when Rohan was sentenced by public opinion for allegedly abandoning her during a pregnancy, she corrected the record. She didn’t have to. She chose to, not for herself, but to set the facts straight about the father of her children.

Lauryn Hill’s Relationship with Wyclef Jean

Before Rohan, there was Wyclef. Lauryn and her Fugees bandmate were in a relationship from roughly 1991 to 1996, a relationship that overlapped with Wyclef’s 1994 marriage to Marie Claudinette Jean.

The fallout helped destroy the Fugees. Wyclef wrote about it in his memoir, Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story: “I was married, and Lauryn and I were having an affair, but she led me to believe that the baby was mine, and I couldn’t forgive that.”

The “baby” he’s referencing is Zion, who is Rohan’s son. Lauryn’s song “Ex-Factor” is widely understood to be about the Wyclef relationship. The pain in that track is specific. It landed because it came from a real place.

Despite their complicated history, Lauryn and Wyclef reunited musically. They performed together during YG Marley’s set at Coachella in April 2024. The Fugees also staged a brief reunion tour in 2023.

Where Is Rohan Marley Now?

Rohan married Brazilian model Barbara Fialho on March 23, 2019, in her hometown of Montes Claros, Brazil. They have a daughter, Maria, born later that year. DancehallMag reported that the marriage ended in 2020, and as of early 2024, Rohan was in a relationship with Cuban-American model Maytee Martinez.

By his own count on Drink Champs, Rohan has 12 children total: two with his first wife Geraldine Khawly, five with Lauryn, one with Fialho, and others he hasn’t publicly detailed.

He and Lauryn maintain a co-parenting relationship. On Sara’s 16th birthday, Rohan posted on Instagram: “Thank you to your amazing mother @mslaurynhill, no one does it better.” On Drink Champs, he called Lauryn “super great” and praised her role in shaping YG Marley’s career: “It’s so beautiful to see her create her art and teach Joshua the way.”

Lauryn Hill Chose Privacy, and That Choice Defined Her Story

Lauryn Hill served three months in federal prison in 2013 for failing to file tax returns on roughly $1.8 million in income between 2005 and 2007. Rohan took temporary custody of their five children during that time. Lauryn paid back over $970,000 in back taxes before sentencing. She was released and went back to work.

She didn’t do a press tour about it. She didn’t write a tell-all. She served the time, handled her business, and kept moving.

That’s the pattern. Lauryn has never organized her private life for public consumption. She never confirmed or denied a marriage, never explained who Micah’s father is, and never told the full story of what happened with Rohan, or with Wyclef, or with the years she spent away from the spotlight after Miseducation.

The woman who made one of the greatest albums in the history of recorded music, the first hip-hop album to win Album of the Year at the Grammys, the first recording by a female rapper certified diamond, decided that her private life was private. The fact that people are still searching “Lauryn Hill husband” 15 years after her last relationship ended says more about the public’s need for labels than it does about her.

Lauryn chose her own terms. She always has.
