Jay-Z reportedly picked himself to headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on February 14, 2027, according to reports from Puck News and Deadline this week. A September report claimed organizers struggled to lock anyone down, and the man now named works for the company that helps choose the headliner.
Jay-Z Super Bowl Halftime Report Cites Puck And Deadline
Complex says Puck News writer Dave Brooks first reported the pick. Dimers reports that Puck cited multiple sources and said Jay-Z chose himself over Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Deadline cited a single music industry insider. Neither the NFL nor Roc Nation has confirmed the news, and Jay-Z has not addressed it publicly.
Billionaires.Africa, which published on Wednesday, cites unnamed people familiar with the plans. It reports that Jay-Z plays SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24, that the second date went on sale after the first sold out, and that the sources see those shows as a possible stage for the announcement. The outlet also recalls what Jay-Z said in January 2024: “I thought it would be too selfish to pick myself. Maybe one year. Maybe.” It reports that Jesse Collins, who executive produces the show with Roc Nation, has said the choice belongs to Jay-Z. Puck said representatives for the NFL and Roc Nation did not respond to its request for comment.
The game takes place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Jay-Z has never headlined a Super Bowl halftime show, according to IBTimes UK. Dimers adds that Puck said he could announce the gig during his first SoFi concert, which falls on October 23, and that Pro Football Talk suggested the NFL would coordinate any reveal with ESPN and ABC.
The Business Angle And The Conflict Question
Roc Nation has worked with the NFL since a 2019 partnership. Complex says that deal gives the company final say on who performs. Latination describes a process in which Roc Nation helps choose the headliner through an advisory committee that also includes Apple Music and the NFL, and it calls Jay-Z’s position “an awkward conflict of interest” because he could effectively select himself.
Latination also reports that Jay-Z partnered with the NFL a year after reportedly turning down an offer to perform at halftime, and that he has pushed the lineup toward hip-hop, rap, and R&B artists since. Recent Roc Nation-selected performers include Usher, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, and The Weeknd, per Complex. Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 show holds the viewership record at 133.5 million, and Bad Bunny drew 128.2 million for Super Bowl LX, according to Latination. That sets a high bar for whoever follows, and it explains why the pick draws so much attention.
A September Report Told A Different Story
On September 18, HotNewHipHop relayed a Daily Mail report that organizers were having a hard time locking anyone down. The Daily Mail cited an unnamed source close to Jay-Z and the NFL. The source pointed to political scrutiny after Bad Bunny’s set, the Macklemore controversy, and a lack of a major performance fee as reasons artists might hesitate. The source also suggested the show could feature several performers, with Jay-Z possibly appearing alongside guests.
That report said organizers hoped to announce the performer by the end of September and warned the date could slip into November. Pro Football Talk, cited by Dimers, notes the NFL named its halftime performers in September for each of the past two Super Bowls, so this year’s announcement is running late.
The new reports shift the story from a scramble to a decision made inside the company that runs the process. No report explains how the earlier struggle to book talent led to this choice, and no source says the September account was wrong.
Prediction Markets React To The News
Money moved quickly. Before the reports, Latination cited Kalshi odds that put Jay-Z at 58%, Bieber at 30%, Cyrus at 26%, and Billie Eilish and Harry Styles at 17% each. IBTimes UK reported on September 24 that Jay-Z and Miley Cyrus shared the lead on Kalshi, a prediction market. Dimers says Jay-Z’s contract traded around 93 cents on Tuesday, with the market page showing 94%. Before the reports, he was roughly even with Cyrus. Beyoncé’s headliner contract rose 32 points to 39%, though Puck did not say she would take part and no guests have been confirmed.
Dimers explains that more than one artist can resolve Yes in that market, so the prices add up to well over 100%. It also discloses a commercial relationship with Kalshi. Treat the numbers as trader expectations, not as news. A viral post in September claimed an official announcement, and IBTimes UK said it was false. Watch for a formal NFL release, any Roc Nation statement, and word on whether Jay-Z performs alone or shares the stage.
